Yep. I was in Baltimore just after the riots, did nothing to improve the situation while I was there, and watched Avengers a few days later! You have described homo americanus, or at least me.
It's strange...that melancholy. It's there. Strange because I am such an optimistic/happy person otherwise. Maybe I get all the bad energy out on the typewriter and it allows me to maintain that balancing act.
There's always an undercurrent of melancholy to your work that I enjoy. Well done.
